An Ecuadorian Cookout (by Ben Camp)

[Note from Jon: Brenna and I gave Ben a little “ethnographic assignment:” to observe and write about the experience of an Ecuadorian cook-out at the farm where we are staying. He also took most of the pictures.]

Last Saturday night we had a parillada — a cook-out — with some of our Ecuadorian friends. It was a real experience making the preparations, buying the food, and cleaning the area. Here it seems like it is Andy Griffith times. The food is cheap, and we get to walk to the gas station and get a bottle of pop, except there is no gas. We also get to walk to the market.

The market had many interesting things. They broke the top of the pineapple off. I also saw people cutting meat.

We also went to the meat store.

We even saw a man on a horse the way home

Then we started to grill.

Then we ate some nice grilled meat, potatoes, some kind of corn, and ROAST PLATANO (that is something from the family of banana). And then we watched part of the world cup. It was a fun time. I learned a lot about how Ecuador does things.

Ben, you have a done well telling about and showing pictures of your experience cooking with the people in Ecuador. I really enjoy learning about the Ecuadorian culture. Thank you for teaching me. 😉

Ben, I think you have a very artistic camera eye. I like how you capture things moving in and out of the picture frame. I feel as if I am there with you, smelling the grill, hearing the dogs bark! Thank you for sharing all of this. We miss you all, and will be ready to see you. 🙂
